1970 Rover P5B – “Toby” (NZ New, 55 years young)
Time has come to part with a family member. “Toby” has been with us for 22 years, carrying us to school balls, weddings, and Sunday outings. Always a maker of memories, always turning heads with smiles and thumbs-up wherever he goes.
Not a “white sheet in the garage” car – Toby was built and enhanced to be driven and enjoyed. Subtly upgraded over the years for reliability and drivability, while keeping the original character intact.
Condition
Painted in 2007, rust repairs 2014. Solid, tidy and presentable.
A couple of small scratches (RH guard, LH rear door) and some minor crazing at the boot scuttle.
Interior all complete – rear seat split on the top, fronts showing age (seat covers fitted). Upgrades
Pertronix electronic ignition inside original distributor.
Radiator re-cored + electric fan.
Exhaust tweaked by Jeff Murray (Mr Muffler) for a discreet V8 burble.
Moto-Lita wheel, extra gauges.
Engine rebuilt by Mal Clarke (Bygone Autos) – approx. 200hp, solid rockers, head work, ceramic coated manifolds.
Gearbox rebuilt by Ken Elley (Auckland Automatics).
Headlamps rewired via relays, brighter & safer. Maintenance done in my ownership
Brakes, shocks, re-tempered springs, bushes, ball joints.
Door & boot seals, furflex, water pump, starter motor, thermostats, fuel pump, batteries, tyres, etc.
Kick panels recovered, rust removal & paint.
Big box of spares + parts to return to factory spec included. The Drive The Rover 3.5 V8 and Borg-Warner auto deliver smooth, relaxed power with just enough burble to let you know it’s alive. It has presence, class and warmth — not quite Rolls Royce posh, but very much Rover dignity. Parts & Support Nearly everything still available via JR Wadhams (UK) or Scotts Old Rubber (AUS). Easy ownership for a classic.
Looking for a new custodian to continue the story.
Not concours, but a genuinely sorted, reliable, characterful classic you can drive, show, and enjoy.
